Sadly exposure to toxic blue-green algae is often fatal and can also cause long term health problems in dogs that survive after drinking or swimming in algae-contaminated water. Unfortunately there is no antidote for the toxins produced by blue-green algae and the prognosis for an affected dog is poor. Since they may have a tendency to drink from open water sources or want to go swimming dogs are much more vulnerable to algae poisoning than humans. As I previously mentioned blue-green algae is harmful to humans and animals however dogs are highly susceptible to its harmful effects.
